Snowmobile Sled Expedition

Explore the wilderness and the wildlife around Abisko!

During this adventure through the mountain areas around Abisko National Park you will sit comfortably in a sled driven by one of our snowmobile guides. The area is home to a number of wild animals, for instance moose, reindeer, wolverine and ptarmigan. Their prints can often be seen in the snow and it is not unusual to encounter some of these animals in person. Our guides are well acquainted with the area and will be happy to tell you about life in the Arctic.

You will be taken through a beautiful frozen landscape and after a while elevation will gradually start to increase. When weather conditions are good, you will soon be able to overlook the Abisko area, Lake Torneträsk and the mountains beyond. Before making our way back home we will stop for a break and make a fire where you will be able to enjoy a hot beverage together with the magnificent views.

Starting time for the morning tour is 09:30 and return is at 11:30. The afternoon tour starts at 14:00 and return is 16:00 Warm clothing and hot beverages are included. Please be at our starting point 15 minutes before the scheduled starting time. If you wish to join this trip on another date than those scheduled, please send an email with your request to activities@abisko.me.

In the unlikely event of conditions not allowing us to arrange this trip you will have the choice to either join it on another date or to receive a full refund of your payment. We do not take responsibility for any travel expenses to or from Abisko.

Landscape photography adventure

Landscape photography adventure

Abisko National Park is one of the most beautiful and accessible Arctic wildernesses in Lapland and we are delighted to offer one to one photography workshops here with one of our professional photography guides.

Enjoy a four hour landscape adventure with one of our professional photography guides!

The session will start with a meeting to assess what you would like to learn from the session, your professional guide will then take you to a number of stunning locations chosen to match the type of photographs you would like to capture.

The sessions can cover everything from basic camera skills to more advanced photographic disciplines.

  • Basic camera skills – learn the relationship between shutter speed, aperture and ISO, and how to adapt settings for the subject and the situation.
  • Composition – compose your images like a pro, learn how different focal lengths effect the composition by changing the scale of the background. Learn how to approach a scene and how changing position or tripod height can affect the final shot.
  • Get to know your equipment – learn how to get the most out of your camera and lenses. Learn how to use the customisable settings on your SLR so that you can check the sharpness of your images quickly. Check that you have all the relevant data in RAW images so that you can get the most out of post processing your images.
  • Focusing – Making sure that you get pin sharp shots from front to back. Learn how to use hyper-focal focusing through live view and the depth of field preview. Understand how to maximise your chances of capturing action and fast moving subjects.
  • Macro – How to get macro shots of ice crystals, Arctic lichens and intimate landscapes. Learn how to compose and get the critical focus point on macro shots. Learn how to stack several images to increase your depth of field.

Locations:

Abisko National Park is one of the most exotic and accessible Arctic wildernesses in Lapland. The different locations below represent the best of the local environment. Locations will be selected depending on the conditions and what you want to get out of the session;

  • The Shoreline of Torneträsk – a fantastic location providing many opportunities for landscape and macro photography. There are incredible views of the iconic mountain Lapporten across the lake, beautiful rocks and trees covered in icicles and of course the lake itself which can change daily from calm to wild with waves and spray through to frozen with beautiful ice formations depending on the conditions.
  • The Arctic birch forest – is amazing with snow covered birch trees, wide vistas of the mountains and frozen lakes. Looking in more detail beautiful lichens can be found as well as intricate ice formations. Many animal prints can be found and if you are lucky wildlife can be seen.
  • The Abisko River Canyon – close to the Abisko Tourist Station is a beautiful canyon with icy walls and great leading lines make it a perfect place to talk about and practice composition and focusing in complex situations.

Good to know:

  • Our Landscape Photography Courses are limited to 6 participants per guide – maximizing your ability to spend as much one on one time with your guide as possible. We are confident that you will go home with lots of great pictures and memories of the Arctic that will last a lifetime!

Guided hike to Trollsjön (Rissajaure)

This hike takes us to Sweden's clearest lake. On the way there, we hike through the Kärkevagge valley with its impressive formations after the latest ice age.

The tour begins through mountain birch forest, the path soon takes us up past the tree line and further up into Kärkevagge which means the Stone valley in Sami. The valley is filled with boulders of various sizes some large as multi-storey houses, which gave the name of the valley. At the end of Kärkevagge lies Trollsjön (Troll lake). The lake is incredibly clear and has a depth of 36m and in good conditions you can see all the way down to the bottom. Once at the lake, it is time for lunch and for those who dare a refreshing dip in the clear but ice cold water. The lake's Sami name is Rissajaure which means The lake that sparkles like fire.

During the hike your guide will tell you about the history of the area and about the plants and wildlife that you can find in the mountains.

The Ultimate Aurora Photo Adventure × × × × × × ×
The Ultimate Aurora Photo Adventure

The Ultimate Aurora Photo Adventure

Join one of Lights Over Lapland’s professional aurora guides for an opportunity to see and photograph the aurora borealis in one of our lovely locations in and around Abisko National Park!

The Ultimate Aurora Photo Adventure

Due to a tendency for clear skies, Abisko is one of the greatest places in the world to
see the northern lights.
We will provide you with a DSLR camera & lens
that is preset to capture the northern lights and quickly go over the
basic skills that you will need to find and photograph the magical
aurora borealis.

Our Ultimate Aurora Photo Adventure offers you THREE different ways to see the northern lights:
depending
upon the weather and aurora forecast we will hunt for the lights on
foot at a nearby teepee, chase the lights in a modern 4×4 van, or ride
on a cozy sleigh which is pulled behind a snowmobile to one of our
wilderness camps in and around Abisko National Park.

This evening under the stars offers you a fantastic opportunity to
learn about the culture & natural history of Lapland and gives you a
chance to experience beauty that can only be found in Abisko National
Park. During our time together we will discuss the way that locals
interact with nature and explore the cultural interpretations of the
northern lights that the local inhabitants of the region have believed
during the last several centuries.
Small groups of 8 guests guarantee a very personal and genuine experience and ensure a safe and comfortable trip into the Arctic environment.

What makes this tour better than others?

Lights Over Lapland started offering our original Nightly Aurora Photo Tour
way back in 2012. It was the first aurora photo tour in Abisko, and over the last ten years we have helped thousands of
satisfied guests from all over the world see and photograph the northern
lights in Abisko National Park. A few years later, we formed a
partnership with our friends at Activities In Abisko and added our
Wilderness Aurora Adventure which took our clients deeper into the
Arctic Wilderness surrounding Abisko than any other operator in Abisko.
During this time, we have constantly asked for feedback from our guests
about what they are looking for in an aurora chase and have used the
collective brain power of our guests and guides to create a brand new
adventure, which we believe represents the
absolute best way to see the northern lights in Abisko National Park.
This new and exciting adventure takes all the best elements of our
legacy Nightly Aurora Photo Tour & Wilderness Aurora Adventure, adds
a chase to the package and combines all three methods of aurora hunting
into one incredible adventure, which we believe truly is the ultimate
aurora adventure available in Abisko.

While other operators may give you one method of
chasing the lights on foot or in a minivan, Lights Over Lapland is proud
to be the only outfitter to invest so much time and customer research
into a brand new adventure that gives you not one, but
THREE
methods to see and photograph the northern lights and the absolute best
chances of a successful aurora chase in Abisko National Park. We
include warm clothing, camera gear, warm drinks and access to the most
experienced team of aurora guides in Abisko National Park. We are proud
of the fact that we are fully insured and have all the necessary permits
to operate our tours in Abisko National Park, which many of our
competitors have simply chosen not to do. We are also incredibly proud
of the fact that all of our evening adventures have a maximum guest to
guide ratio of 8:1.
Keeping a strict limit of eight guests per guide ensures that you will always have lots of access to your guide and that you will never be in a large group of strangers which is a common occurrence when joining chases provided by other operators. This makes the experience much more genuine, and
helps us maintain proper social distancing at our locations. Since your
adventure includes all transportation,
there is not a set time that we have to return back to the hotel,
which gives us more flexibility and the ability to stay out later than
any other outfitter in Abisko. We are confident that our new adventure
represents the absolute best single evening aurora tour in Abisko
National Park, and we are confident that you will too!

Good to know:

  • Our Ultimate Aurora Photo Adventures are strictly limited to 8
participants per guide – maximizing your ability to spend as much one on
one time with your guide as possible. We are confident that you will go
home with lots of great pictures and memories of the Arctic that will
    last a lifetime!
  • If you are a keen photographer who is interested in learning as much
about photographing the auroras as possible please inform your guide at
the start of the tour so that they can custom tailor your lesson around
your specific desires. This will ensure that you go home with lots of
new skills that you can use in the future!
  • It is important that you bring warm clothes to wear under the
overalls we provide you and warm insulated winter boots. Heavy duty
arctic boots are available to rent during our tours.
  • We ask that you provide your own SD memory cards to be used in our
cameras. We recommend a minimum of four gigabytes of storage space.
Memory cards are also available for purchase if needed (32 GB: 250 SEK).
  • Minimum age: 10 years old (children under 15 years old will need to share a camera with an adult).
  • Lights Over Lapland’s tours are designed in a way that will
accommodate as many different levels of physical fitness as possible. We
usually walk less than one kilometer per direction to and from our many
    locations in Abisko National Park.
It is common to walk in snow and in cold conditions during our tours. If you have any physical limitations please inform us when you make a booking so we can discuss your needs ahead of time.

What's included?

Do I have to be a photographer to enjoy this trip?
We have had countless guests join us who were not photographers over the years and we are happy to say that they have all gone home very happy! While our Ultimate Aurora Photo Adventure includes camera gear, this trip
are not specifically designed for photographers – we simply include
camera gear as we believe that the best souvenir of the northern lights
is a photograph of the display that you witness during our trip. While
our guides will be happy to help you capture beautiful photographs,
their main focus is to make sure that you see the lights and that you
enjoy every moment of your trip. We are confident that you will enjoy our trip even if you have no interest in photography!

Locations

Lights Over Lapland and Activities in Abisko have more than 15
locations to choose from including teepees, yurts, wilderness cabins
and many more! Most of the other operators in the area have one or two
locations and we are proud of the fact that we have access to more
beautiful locations than all of our competitors combined!

Each night, before the start of your aurora adventure our team of
professionals will analyze weather patterns and aurora activity and make
a plan for the evening’s adventure based on real time information. If
the weather in Abisko looks promising we will either walk to one of our
teepees near the STF Abisko Turiststation or hop on a beautiful sleigh
which is pulled behind a snowmobile by one of our professional
wilderness guides.
If the weather looks more promising further
afield we will jump in one of our 4×4 vans and drive up to 100 KM
towards Norway or Kiruna in order to find a clear sky.

Dogsledding excursion to Kiruna × × × × × × ×
Dogsledding excursion to Kiruna

Dogsledding excursion to Kiruna

Do you dream of joining a real musher for a once in a lifetime Arctic Experience? Are all the dog sledding tours in Abisko fully booked during your time in Abisko? Don’t worry – Lights Over Lapland is here to help!

Before Covid arrived Abisko was blessed with several dog sledding companies, which offered our guests lots of choice and availability. Sadly, Covid led to the loss of 50% of the dog sledding capacity in Abisko so now there is only one provider in the National Park who offers dog sledding adventures. They are a fantastic company, with incredible dog sledding trips in Abisko, but unfortunately for our guests they are usually fully booked months in advance. This makes it very difficult to find availability for our guests on the ground in Abisko. With this in mind, Lights Over Lapland, and our friends at Kiruna Dogsled have created a brand new and exciting dog sledding adventure in the beautiful village of Oinakka – just outside of Kiruna, near the world’s original Icehotel.

Lights Over Lapland and Kiruna Dog Sled’s owners have been friends for nearly 15 years, and both companies put our guest experience’s during our tours as a top priority. With this in mind, we have created a 10 – 12 KM circuit which crosses through some of the most scenic Arctic wilderness in the area that is sure to help you create spectacular memories of your own mushing adventure during your time in our care. During the dog sledding adventure, your professional musher/guide will drive a sled which accommodates up to four guests. Having a professional musher drive the sled ensures the highest levels of safety for our guests, and allows healthy guests of nearly all levels of physical ability to enjoy this once in a lifetime dog sledding adventure. While your professional musher controls the team of dogs, you can sit back, relax, take LOTS of pictures and enjoy every second of your time in the Arctic wilderness.

Approximately halfway through the dog sledding adventure, we will stop at our remote Arctic wilderness camp where your guide will prepare a warm fire, piping hot drinks and classic Swedish Fika. An example of what might be served is a warm cup of coffee or tea and steaming cinnamon rolls. During this break we encourage you to spend some quality one on one time with your dogs as they absolutely love to cuddle and enjoy a belly rub in exchange for providing you with the thrill of riding behind them in a classic dog sledding adventure. After you have had a chance to relax by the fire, we will hop back on the dog sled and continue with our 10 – 12 KM circuit.

GOOD TO KNOW:

  • Lunch is not included nor available for purchase at the dogsledding camp so we highly recommend that you bring a packed lunch on this excursion.
  • This activity takes place in Oinakka, near Kiruna. Round trip transportation from Abisko & Björkliden is included.
  • You may have to share a sled with other people. We allow up to 4 people per sled.
  • The actual time on the sled is approximately 2 x 30 minutes but can be slightly shorter or longer depending on snow conditions.

WHAT IS INCLUDED?

  • Round trip transportation from your hotel in Abisko or Björkliden to the dogsledding camp near Kiruna.
